Information
In order do not fall out into the misconfiguration management the reference installation try to use some ideas from the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL). Release management is also one of the ITIL section and basically in use for the D-Grid reference installation release cycle. The configuration management database (cmdb) prototype construction is the second, and probably the most interesting point of the ITIL implementation.
The following ideas is used for the cmdb architecture:
- Common information
- configuration management (CM) is a policy-based management to move the system from one state into another
- configuration management system is a system to manage configurations
- configuration item (CI) refers to the fundamental structural unit of a configuration management system. Examples: individual requirements documents, hardware, software, models, plans, and people.
- Information Technology
- a cmdb - is a database of databases to maintain the critical IT management data with the goal to provide the Service Desk with information that showed which application ran on which server, and then indicate where to route the ticket.
- a cmdb data can be filled in automatically from the cluster by using the automating configuration tool
- there are two terms HOST <--> ITIL
Concept sketch
Host
- HOST is a service location available in the network.
- provides the information about itself
- hostname
- IP address
- links to
- applications set
- OS from operating system database
- hardware database item
- employee, responsible for them
- provides the information about itself
- HOST's applications provides the base for the ITIL pyramid or ITIL world is based on the HOST's applications.
- there are some HOST related databases
- operating system database
- hardware database
- responsible employee database
ITIL
- ITIL is a hierarchical application description library with levels as:
- Service (with Subservice or Servicebaustein)
- Applications
- there are some ITIL related catalogues
- Service catalogue (groups services by category and allows for searching)
- A description of the service
- Timeframes or service level agreement for fulfilling the service
- Who is entitled to request/view the service
- Costs (if any)
- How to fulfill the service
- Application description catalog
- Service catalogue (groups services by category and allows for searching)
