Project DMON

D-MON’s vision is to realize a Grid wide monitoring architecture across several underlying, heterogeneous systems taking in consideration multiple resource providers and virtual organisations.

The resulting system, as it can be seen in the architecture figure, should allow dynamic, VO-based, and customer-centric views on the provisioned resources and services. This can be reached by joining VO-Management information with the monitoring data provided by the information systems of the middlewares: CIS, MDS 4, and BDII. Hence, to use the current D-MON infrastructure, the D-Grid Site needs to be published into the one or more information systems and the D-MON will care on the view generation from the available data.

Monitoring in D-Grid reference installation

There are two levels for monitoring in D-Grid reference installation:

  1. User/Global Operation Center level. Includes three information systems:
    1. BDII (Berkeley Database Information Index) - glite information system (configured by the site-info.def monitoring configuration)
    2. MDS (Monitoring and Discovery System) - Globus Toolkit information system (configured by the GT4 monitoring configuration)
    3. CIS (Common Information Service) - Unicore information system (https://dgrid-unic.fz-juelich.de:9110/D-Grid/services/Registry?res=default_registry)
  2. Server Administration level. Recommended the following tools:
    1. Ganglia (example)
    2. Nagios
    3. SAM/SFT(alternative)

Nagios in D-Grid reference installation

Nagios is a system and network monitoring application. It watches hosts and services that you specify, alerting you when things go bad and when they get better.
