Some definitions

Configuration
is the template/pattern/policy to describe infrastructure. The configuration describes the current state of the system resources and affects system function and performance.
Management (IT)
is the templates/patterns/policies production for concrete purpose and control for their execution.
Configuration management
is the management of IT infrastructure to improve system function and performance. Configuration management tidily coupled with changes.
Change (IT)
movement of the system state (operation). Can be scheduled or initiated by event. Set of changes groups patch.
Patch
group of changes with low significance for the system.
Release
group of patches, which have high significance for the system.
Release management
is the management of releases. Coupled with terms: patch and release.
